Wayne Armond has had many years experience in Jamaican bands.
From the seventies, the HELLS ANGELS (a group formed in high
school) worked tirelessly on the then flourishing live music circuit in
Jamaica, playing the hits of the day and backing local music heroes
the likes of the WAILERS, KEN BOOTHE, DELROY WILSON, DERRICK
HARRIOTT, MARCIA GRIFFITHS,ROY SHIRLEY and many others who
went on to become international stars.
In 1978, Wayne became the guitarist with the famous BYRON LEE
AND THE DRAGONAIRES getting his first taste of working
internationally. Wayne's thirst for originality led to the formation of
CHALICE in 1980. Known for their emotional and energetic
performances worldwide, CHALICE has also had many local hit
recordings, I STILL LOVE YOU (1981), a heart wrenching ballad
sung by Wayne stayed a top the local charts for fourteen weeks,
GOOD TO BE THERE, CAN'T DUB, DANGEROUS DISTURBANCES,
REVIVAL TIME, POCOMANIA DAY and the popular DANCE HALL
PHILHARMONIC, all hit the Jamaican top ten. Chalice had the
distinction of being the first reggae group to perform in Istanbul,
Turkey and also the first pop group to perform in Mexico City after a
fifteen year ban on pop concerts in that city.
In a period of inactivity for Chalice, Wayne was offered the position
as guitar player for Jimmy Cliff's band, a position which Wayne
regards an honour as Cliff, an icon in reggae and pop music, is one
of Wayne's heroes. The association lasted for six years, in that time,
Wayne played on many of Cliff's new songs including the hit from
COOL RUNNINGS (I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW) and toured the world.
Wayne also works as a guitarist for another Jamaican icon, MONTY
ALEXANDER.He has recorded two albums with this jazz legend.
As a song writer Wayne has written many songs for other artistes,
most notable being RIGHTOUS YOUTH(Richie Spice)THE LION AND
THE LAMB (RITA MARLEY), CHEATER (SPANNER BANNER), WOMAN
(MARCIA GRIFFITHS), SECOND CLASS (CAROL GONZALES & BUJU
BANTON), RIGHTEOUS YOUTH (RICHIE SPICE). Other artistes who
have done Wayne's songs include J.C. LODGE, DENNIS BROWN,
CULTURE and TYRONE TAYLOR.
As a session guitarist Wayne has recorded with many reggae
artistes at home and abroad including ALPHA BLONDY (IVORY
COAST, AFRICA), PIEER POLJAK and BERNARD LAVILLIER (FRANCE)
MAXI PRIEST (UK) MANU DIBANGO (AFRICA) CARLTON PRIDE (the
son of black country and western singer CHARLIE PRIDE) (USA) and
his credits with local stars reads like a who's who.
In 2010, he composed and recorded the Soundtrack for the Storm
Saulter full length feature film "BETTER MUS COME" which featured
a number of songs performed by the Artiste "M" including the Title
track "Still Searching For Better''
In 2011 Wayne was the musical director for the musical comedy
"ELove"...a play starring Carol Gonzales and A.J Brown and directed
by Pablo Hoilette...he recorded original arrangements from the score
to suit the Caribbean culture.
Wayne has worked for producers CLIVE HUNT, MIKEY BENNETT,
PETER ASHBOURNE and HENRY K (USA) and is a Producer for hire in
his own right
Currently performing with CHALICE, his duet WARM & EASY, and
the acoustic trio JAKOOSTIC.Wayne has also recorded a solo
instrumental album (A Jamaican Tribute to legendary songwriter
Burt Bacarach) and an acoustic / vocal album with the group
Jakoostic. He is currently preparing a Chalice Anniversary Album
due this year
Wayne is married and has four children.
